Mission & Philosophy
At Burkwood, we are rebuilding lives. Our mission is to help individuals with alcohol or drug addictions and/or co-occurring disorders to develop coping skills that support a lifestyle of recovery. A cornerstone of our program is the belief that accepting personal responsibility is a key to lasting sobriety. We believe that maladaptive behaviors can be replaced with healthy ones that are more fulfilling of individual needs.
As a first step, we ask our clients to accept the reality of their illness. Chemical dependency is a chronic, progressive disease that can be diagnosed and treated. Abstinence is always the ultimate goal of treatment at Burkwood, but we also recognize that relapse is part of the disease of addiction. As such, we work with our clients intensively to create individualized treatment plans, relapse prevention plans, and arrangements for aftercare.
We understand that getting help is often the hardest step toward sobriety. All of our clients are treated with dignity and respect and with an appreciation for who they are as unique individuals. We accept the philosophy of the 12 Step recovery program, but are not limited to it as the sole means to recovery. Our program will be modified in treatment and scope to maximize our clients’ strengths and to meet their particular needs.
